CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The City of Childersburg has announced the opening of its new tornado shelter to all residents during specific tornado threat conditions defined by the National Weather Service.
The shelter, located behind the R.S. Limbaugh Community Center and the Childersburg Senior Center at 65 Graves Ave., will be unlocked during a Tornado Watch, Tornado Warning, or Tornado Emergency. To ensure security and readiness, the shelter will remain locked until one of these threat levels is issued.
The City of Childersburg, along with the Childersburg Police Department, Childersburg Parks and Recreation, the Childersburg Fire and Rescue Department, and Childersburg Information & Events social media pages, will provide notifications regarding the shelter’s status.
The shelter can also be accessed from 4 Ave. SE by turning into the Parks and Rec’s football stadium, with directional signs in place near both entrances to guide facility users.
Mayor Ken Wesson is actively seeking federal funding to construct an additional tornado shelter on the north side of Hwy 280, aiming for broader coverage and accessibility.
Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the shelter’s location and access conditions. Shelter rules prohibit pets (except service animals), weapons, alcohol, illegal drugs, smoking, and profanity.
Each person is allowed one small bag and is expected to conduct themselves respectfully.
