Board of Education welcomes new members, Superintendent gains raise

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga Board of Education met Tuesday evening with the full agenda of action items. The meeting opened with a number of special recognition items:

The Board welcomed new member, Dr. Rekha Chadalawada, Tyler Laye was recognized for earning the Carl Perkins Community Service Award from the Alabama Association for Career Technical Education, Jon Segars was recognized as a U. S. Army Cadet Command Inaugural Hall of Fame Member, also recognized were local student participants in the American Legion State Conference: Ally Lewis, Chandler Deerman, Caitlyn McTier, Tommy Marlowe, Caleb Dates, and Chase Merkel. Caitlyn McTier and Chandler Deerman were also selected as Governor and Lieutenant Governor, respectively, and will receive tuition scholarships to the University of Alabama. The Board also voted to give Superintendent Todd Freeman a four-percent raise, double the raise mandated by the state legislature.

In other actions:

The Board approved new & revised policies. Approval was given to financial statements and bank reconciliations for August: General Fund ($584,934.96); CNP ($11,716.36); Bond ($799,383.05) & Payroll ($1,432,143.58).

The Board accepted a bid for HVAC at the Central Office, and they rejected a bid for Softball/Baseball Stadium Renovations.

Approval was given for the following student field trips: for Mrs. Leanna Holmes’ 7th and 8th grade AVID students to tour the campus of Georgia Tech and attend a football game on October 15th; for Mrs. Tricia Clark’s 8th Grade History Classes to visit Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament in Lawrenceville, Georgia, on December 2nd & May 10th; and for the Therapeutic Services Class, Patient Care Technician Class, Anatomy Class and Bio Med Class at Sylacauga High School to attend the Bodies Exhibition in Atlanta, Georgia on November 17th.

The Board approved a Dual Enrollment Contract with the University of Alabama, as well as a new tuition student for the current school year.

– Joseph Lanier Corbitt, Substitute Bus Driver, effective September 28, 2016
– Edward Taylor, Substitute Bus Driver, effective September 28, 2016
– Stanley Ellis, Substitute Bus Driver, effective September 28, 2016
– David M. Story, Substitute Teacher, effective September 28, 2016
– Tammie Lafaye McElrath, Substitute Teacher, effective September 28, 2016
– Shondreka Johnson, Substitute Teacher, effective September 28, 2016

The next regular meeting of the Board of Education will be Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at 5:30 p.m. with a quarterly work session beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Board of Education Central Office.
