Wild Sunday police chase damages police vehicles; leaves one man in jail

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – A peaceful Sunday night during Labor Day weekend quickly turned hectic as a police chase stretched through multiple Talladega County cities.

Sylacauga Police Chief Kelley Johnson said SPD assisted in a backup role to the Talladega County Sheriff’s Office during the police chase. Johnson said his officers attempted to stop the driver eluding police, 29-year-old Justin Luke Paschal, with spikes while he was in Sylacauga.

Johnson explained Paschal hit and damaged one of SPD’s newest vehicles before bringing the chase through the Walmart parking lot and taking off on Hwy. 280 towards Childersburg.

The chase ended in Childersburg near Coleman Rd. Nancy Willis, owner of Trailwares in downtown Sylacauga, posted this picture on social media after the chase was over.

Willis told SylacaugaNews.com the car driven by Paschal tore through family property before being stopped. When Willis arrived on the scene she said Paschal was already in handcuffs. In her photo, you can see where a CPD vehicle was damaged during the chase.

“We were just glad no one was hurt,” said Willis. “It was very lucky that we had no kids out there. On a holiday weekend we usually have kids out riding four-wheelers and golf carts. There are usually about 10 or 12 kids out and about playing around, so we’re just thankful no one was hurt.”

Paschal is currently being held in the Talladega County Jail and is charged with Attempting to Elude, Criminal Mischief 2nd, Criminal Mischief 3rd, and Reckless Endangerment.
