SYLACAUGA, Ala. – With Halloween approaching, many people in Sylacauga are seeking a thrill at local haunted places. Anyone who grew up in Sylacauga knows one of these places is Gravity Hill.

Most residents of Sylacauga have at least heard of Gravity Hill even if they have not visited. When someone visits Gravity Hill, they are supposed to pull up to the stop sign, put their car in neutral, and feel their car roll backwards up the hill.

Yes, up the hill.

Many people say it is an optical illusion while others claim the site is actually haunted.

There are a few explanations that have become legend among Sylacauga residents. One explanation: a man named Henry had car trouble, stopped at the stop sign, and was killed by another driver. Henry polices the hill and pushes anyone who stops there for too long up the hill so they do not meet the same fate.

Possibly the most common legend is the one of the road being on a Native American burial ground. The spirits of the Native Americans push away anyone who lingers on their resting place for too long for not wanting to be disturbed.

Others still claim it is only an optical illusion, and the car only appears to be rolling up the hill, when it is actually going down.

To test these theories, SylacaugaNews.com reporters, Jennifer Keith and Jeremy Law, went to Gravity Hill to check it out. They both agree it is spooky, but it is most likely an optical illusion.
