A Sylacauga woman has been arrested for two counts of Cruelty to Animals.

According to a press release from the Sylacauga Police Department, warrants were issued for 60-year-old Wanda Kay Powell’s arrest on Nov. 15 and she was arrested on Nov. 22. The crime however, took place in July.

Cruelty to animals is a broad charge, but SPD Chief Kelley Johnson described exactly what happened in this case. He told SylacaugaNews.com Powell killed one puppy and severely injured another. Johnson said Powell pierced both animals with a garden tool. The exact tool was not specified.

SPD Animal Control officer Michelle Taylor told SylacaugaNews the puppy that survived, named Davenport, was taken in by a local rescue called Feral Dogs of Avondale Mills and Friends of Sylacauga Animal Shelter. This rescue raised money for Davenport’s surgeries and nursed him back to health. Davenport suffered a skull fracture over the frontal sinus in the attacks. This trauma to his frontal and maxillary sinuses caused him trouble. He spent 13 days at 280 AMC. Read the entire story by clicking here.

Davenport, however, did make a full recovery, and now lives the life all animals deserve to live. Today Davenport has a forever home in Massachusetts where he lives with a loving and caring family.

Cruelty to Animals is a Class A Misdemeanor and on the first conviction shall be punished by a fine of not more than $3000 or imprisonment in the county jail for not more than one year, or both fine and imprisonment.
