SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Excitement filled the the Sylacauga High School Media Center last week as senior Tierra Dark officially signed to play Division 2 basketball with Alabama A&M.
A story almost ten years in the making continued as Dark fulfilled her dreams of playing as a college basketball player.
In the fourth grade, Dark began playing basketball for a recreation league team. At the time, basketball was not something she took very seriously. But as Dark continued to grow through practice, she decided to focus her time and attention to basketball in the eighth grade. That same year, she was promoted to the varsity girls basketball team.
Throughout her high school career, Dark had the opportunity to play in the state championship game, the Final Four, and in many regional championship match-ups. While competing in these various arenas, she aimed high and stayed focused on her goal of playing college ball following her graduation.
“I’ve been lucky to be part of a great program here at Sylacauga,” said Dark. “From day one, I felt like I was apart of the Sylacauga Lady Aggie family.”
For the past few years, Dark has been working around the clock to get her name out to college recruiters and coaches. This dedication is what allowed her to be spotted by Alabama A&M putting her at the top of the list for recruitment. Though she had other offers, Dark knew picking the Bulldogs was her best choice.
Dark not only excels on the basketball court, but she also maintains a high-level of academic achievement as a student athlete. In high school, she kept an excellent GPA while participating in both basketball and track. She desires to major in Sports Medicine so she can continue to be around sports even after she finishes her basketball career.
Dark said much of her success is owed to her fellow Sylacauga basketball players and coaches.
“I just want to thank my coaches and everyone else who has ever supported me whether it was noticeable or behind the scenes,” said Dark.
