SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The last few months have been filled with many accomplishments and awards for the Sylacauga City Schools System.

Many student-athletes have signed scholarships in their respective areas of expertise, Sylacauga High School’s Future Business Leaders of America chapter brought home many awards from the the 66th Annual State Leadership Conference in Birmingham, and more awards may be set to come soon.

And this time a teacher, not a student, may be the one to bring glory to the Marble City.

Indian Valley Pre-K teacher Ami Brooks is among 16 finalists for Alabama Teacher of the Year. The 16 finalists were selected from a field of over 140 educators from across the state.

In a statement, State Superintendent of Education Michael Sentance said, “Well-prepared. dedicated, caring, enthusiastic and innovative elementary and secondary teachers are essential to achieving excellence in Alabama’s schools. The 16 Alabama Teacher of the year Finalists are shining examples of professionalism and dedication to Alabama’s most valued asset, its children.”

Indian Valley Principal Monte Abner could not be more proud of Brooks. “She is a top-notch educator and a friend of kids,” he said. “She makes learning exciting, engaging and challenging. She specializes in building relationships with students and their families, challenging students by engaging them in rigorous learning tasks and connecting students to the world around them.”

Abner also complimented every other teacher on his staff, saying he works with the greatest teachers on earth.

Brooks will soon learn if she will indeed be Alabama’s Teacher of the year. The field will be narrowed down to a field of four and the winner will be announced at a ceremony in Montgomery on Wednesday, May 10.

Alabama’s Teacher of the Year spends the majority of the school year serving as a full-time ambassador for education and the teaching profession, as well as presenting workshops to various groups. Additionally, Alabama’s representative is a candidate for the National Teacher of the Year award.
