Sylacauga City Council approves tax abatement for Pursell Agri-Tech; 22 jobs to be created

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga City Council approved a tax abatement request from Pursell Agri-Tech, LLC during its scheduled meeting Tuesday night.

The company is set to open a fertilizer coatings plant which will result in the creation in 22 jobs in Sylacauga over the next three years and a capital investment of $8,450,000.

Mayor Jim Heigl is excited about the new industry and jobs coming to his city. “22 more jobs, along with all the jobs coming to the Hwy. 280 development means this area is growing, and that’s something for the people of Sylacauga to be excited about,” he said. “The technology that Pursell Agri-Tech is bringing in will be a big plus to our city.”

The plant will be at the old Marvin’s Building Materials and Home Center on Hwy. 148. The company also plans to buy the old Budweiser building and combine the two into one facility. In a future council meeting, the company will seek approval to recover the railroad tracks that led to the building in order to transport the finished product.

Here are other actions taken by the council at its Tuesday meeting:

  1. Authorized the execution by Mayor Jim Heigl of an easement in favor of Alabama Power granting permission to cross a portion of property owned by the city of Sylacauga along Billingsley Rd. to install a new electrical service to the Industrial Development Board Speculative Building to be utilized by Fleetwood Metal.
  2. Accepted recommendation to declare 2011 Ford Crown Victoria as surplus and authorized for sale on GovDeals.com or some other means.
  3. Approved resolution authorizing funding of one-time bonus for city retirees. Estimated cost of $30,634.
  4. Approved resolution authorizing advertising for grant consulting and engineering firms to assist the city in application development process related to fiscal year 2017 Community Development Block Grant project.
  5. Took action necessary to authorize a part-time Building Inspector position in the Code Enforcement Department.
  6. Authorized Amendment to Chamber of Commerce contract  providing $1,000 ($500.00 from the Talladega County Commission) to help cover promotional expenses related to travel to the Babe Ruth regional tournaments.
  7. Approve expenses for HR Specialist Jayne McGee to attend Developing Personnel Policies and Procedures August 3-4, 2107 in Hoover.
  8. Authorized sending two attendees to the upcoming Leadership Sylacauga training program through the Chamber of Commerce. Tuition is $450 each.
  9. Approved expenses for Council to attend the CMO Regional Training in either Alabaster on Thursday, Sept. 14, or in Montgomery on Saturday, August 12.
  10. Approved expenses for Judge Barry Vaughn to attend the 2017 Fall Municipal Law Conference in Orange Beach Sept. 21-23, 2017.
  11. Approved expenses for Accounting Specialist Yourlanda Burns to attend the GFOAA Summer Conference in Orange Beach Aug. 16-18, 2017.
  12. Approved expenses for Prosecutor Joe Carlton to attend the 2017Fall Municipal Law Conference in Orange Beach Sept. 21-23, 2017.
  13. Approved expenses for HR Specialist Jayne McGee and Accounting Clerk Sandy Sorensen to attend the Local Government Heal Insurance Board’s 2017 Payroll Clerk and Unit Administrator Conference in Wetumpka Oct. 4, 2017.
  14. Approved balance of accounts payable for June in the amount of $200,276. 72.
  15. Approved June payroll in the amount of $529,234.99.
