Sylacauga City Council approves new trash pick-up contract; saves over $300,000 per year

SYLACAUGA, Ala.- The Sylacauga City Council held its second meeting in the month of March Tuesday night. In a work session prior to the official meeting council members reviewed topics to be discussed in the meeting to follow.

The work session was highlighted once again by discussion of the city potentially saving over $300,000 per year on garbage pick-up. The city is currently under contract with the company Waste Pro until March 2018, but that contract has not stopped the two parties from renegotiating the terms and conditions of the deal.

The $300,000 dollars saved will come from decreasing the amount of garbage pick-ups per week from two to one, and removing curbside yard/bulk waste pick-up responsibilities from Waste Pro and handing it over to the Sylacauga Street Department.

A Waste Pro representative was at the work session. She said her company is on-board with the changes, and it is looking at ways to change routes for recycling and garbage pick-up to reach maximum efficiency for her company.

Council members voted on and passed these changes during the official meeting Tuesday night. Changes will become effective April 1 for recycling and curbside yard/bulk pickup. Changes to traditional garbage pick-up will become effective May 1.

Also during the work session, Councilman Ashton Fowler brought up discussion about numerous projects taking place at Sylacauga’s secondary water source, Lake Howard. Fowler said the Sylacauga Utilities Board (SUB) recently stocked the lake with 1,250 grass carp in order to eliminate weeds it believed could potentially affect the quality of the water.

Lake Howard is also set to get its security upgraded. Folwer said there are plans to install alarm systems and security cameras which will be able to be controlled remotely from any location. According to Fowler the security system will take only a few days to install. A date has not been set to start the project.

The official City Council meeting lasted just over 30 minutes. The Council passed many items important to the city. Those items are as follows:

  • Accepted the East Highland Demolition Project as complete and closed, and authorized final payments to be released.
  • Authorized the Mayor and City Clerk to execute a permit with the Alabama Department of transportation for the installation, ongoing operation and maintenance of a traffic signal on Hwy. 280 at the Hutton Project development site.
