SYLACAUGA, Ala. – During Wednesday morning’s Sylacauga Board of Education meeting, the board accepted Dr. Todd Freeman’s resignation as superintendent effective March 12.

Freeman was named superintendent of Vestavia Hills City Schools on January 31 after serving as superintendent of the Sylacauga City Schools since 2013.

During the meeting, the board named Dr. Frank Costanzo as the system’s interim superintendent effective March 12.

“He comes highly recommended and we are confident he will do a great job for us,” said school board president Dr. Steve Marlowe. “We are fortunate that our system has a magnificent team of faculty, staff, and administrators committed to Sylacauga City Schools. The board has every confidence they will continue to do an excellent job and that our students will not be impacted by the transition. My colleagues on the board will work diligently to find the best superintendent available for our system.”

Marlowe said Costanzo had a long, and successful, tenure as superintendent of Tuscaloosa County Schools. Since his retirement, Costanzo has served as interim superintendent for other systems in the state, including Talladega City Schools.

The board will move forward on a search process for the next superintendent.
