SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Each month, Sylacauga Police Chief Kelley Johnson turns in an activity report from his department to Mayor Jim Heigl. These reports detail how many calls are made, what type of calls they are, arrests, traffic citations, and more.

The report from the month of July showed that the Sylacauga Police Department responded to a large number of service calls.  The report details that the Patrol Division responded to nearly 2,000 calls, 1,971 to be exact. 38 of the calls were for funeral or business escorts, 35 domestic or other disturbances, and 106 alarms. Johnson wrote the division patrolled nearly 14,000 miles while completing 162 Inicdent-Offense reports and 40 Traffic Accident reports.

Johnson noted this amount of calls were significantly higher compared to June 2017 and July 2016.

In total, 366 cases were made. This includes 293 traffic citations and 73 arrests outside of traffic offenses. The Metro Jail in Sylacauga held an average of two inmates per day. The city’s Investigative Division was busy as well as it was assigned 227 cases in total.

July, and summer in general, is peak time for alcohol related arrests, but the number of DUIs written were down from six in July 2016 to  four this year. However, public intoxication arrests climbed from five in July 2016 to seven this year.

The report also detailed officers and investigators finished 120 hours of training in the month.
