ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. – A Sylacauga man is in jail in Tallapoosa County after breaking into a home in Alexander City, stealing money, and kidnapping the female occupant of the home.

According to Alexander City Police Department Deputy Chief James Easterwood, 29-year-old John Marcus Buford of Sylacauga broke into the home of an Alexander City woman, for which he knew, mid-afternoon on Saturday, June 24. Buford allegedly stole cash and forced the female occupant of the home to leave the residence with him, all while using a weapon.

Details on the type of weapon Buford used can not be released at this time.

Easterwood explained Buford returned the kidnapping victim to her home shortly after with no apparent injuries. The victim then notified police and the Alexander City Police Dept. sent out a “Be on the Lookout” warning to its city and the surrounding areas. In a matter of hours, Easterwood detailed, the Sylacauga Police Department detained Buford, and he was transported back to Alexander City.

Easterwood said Buford’s charges include robbery in the first degree, burglary in the second degree, and kidnapping in the first degree.

Buford’s criminal record is lengthy according to Alabama court records. He has been arrested at least eight different times, including an arrest for child abuse in March 2010.
