SHS Band Director: We are the only band in the world with these drums

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga High School Aggie Band received much needed upgrades to its percussion equipment.

Band Director Ryan Murrell told SylacaugaNews.com Superintendent of Sylacauga City Schools Todd Freeman asked him about the condition of his bands’ drums. His response was honest. “I told him the equipment we had was falling apart,” said Murrell.

Murrell also told Freeman the drums were needed because the Aggie Band is growing. The 2016-17 band had 95 members. The 2017-18 band is expected to have anywhere between 105 to 120 members.

Freeman went above and beyond and then some for the Aggie Band. The band received 15 new drums made by the company, Pearl. They feature an eye catching black, red and silver color scheme.

These drums are not only new to the Aggie Band. They are new to the world. “This is the first line of drums in this style to be made and shipped, not only in the nation, but the entire world,” Murrell said with excitement. “We are the first band to get a crack at them.”

We are very lucky to have a very supportive administration from the school all the way up to the board of education,” stated Murrell appreciatively. “The kids are very excited, and I am very excited.”

The SHS band will have an opportunity to show off their new instruments before the 2017 football season begins. Murrell told SylacaugaNews.com his band is planning to be featured on the July edition of Pearl Magazine.
