SHS Aggies dominating the 5A basketball playoffs

SHARE NOW

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – So far nothing has been able to stop the Aggies in the AHSAA Basketball Playoffs. Both the boys and girls have dominated opponents in the postseason, and that narrative did not change on Monday.

The Lady Aggies, led by Head Coach Derrick Crawford, put on a show in the Capital City early Monday morning in their 5A Regional Semifinal match-up against the Demopolis Tigers. Crawford’s fierce squad beat the Tigers by a score of 62-27.

The game was not always out of reach for the Tigers. At one point Demopolis cut the lead to 11, but then the Aggies turned up the pressure. “When they cut the lead down to 11 we were able to turn up our defensive pressure,” said Crawford. “We got some easy baskets off of the pressure, and stretched the lead back out.”

Overall Crawford said he was very pleased with the energy and intensity his team showed on the hardwood on Monday, but said he still thinks his team can play better. The Lady Aggies are set to face-off against Central Tuscaloosa in the Regional Finals on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00.

As soon as the Lady Aggies finished off Demoplis the boy’s team tipped off against the Sumter Central Jaguars. Coming into the game Head Coach William Copeland was very concerned with the Jaguars’ guards on offense and their ability to force turnovers on defense, but the defense did not phase the Aggies’ offense.

Copeland’s team went 24-for-32 from the floor for the game, but let the Jaguars cut the to eight late in the game. A Darian Garrett three-point shot put the Aggies back up 11, and they never looked back.  SHS sealed the game by going 12-for-12 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, and walked off the court with a win by an 80-65 win. “Sumter Central is a very good and athletic team.”said Copeland. “I am so proud of our kids and so happy for our fans.”

The boys will also be back on the court in Montgomery on Wednesday. This time for the Regional Finals. They are set to play Booker T. Washington at 5:45 p.m.
