Safety concerns rise as heat index could reach 105 degrees Monday

SYLACAUGA, Ala. –  A heat advisory is in effect for Talladega County and much of the state of Alabama.

The day will begin partly cloudy until noon. Skies will then clear and temperatures on will reach into the mid-90s. Although the thermometer will show temperatures up to 94 degrees, the air will feel more like 105.

These temperatures can be dangerous and can, in cases, be deadly. The National Weather Service (NWS) is asking that all people in an area under the heat advisory to take proper precautions.

Those who work outside or spend time outside are at a higher risk than others. According to weather.gov, those who work outside should stay hydrated, take breaks, and know the signs of heat exhaustion. Those indicators are faintness, dizziness, fatigue, heavy sweating and a rapid pulse.

The US government’s weather site also emphasizes the importance of limiting exercise outdoors, checking on the elderly and those without air conditioning and urges against leaving a child or pet alone in a vehicle even if the vehicle’s air conditioner is left on.
