SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga Alliance for Family Enhancement held a greenhouse groundbreaking ceremony in the Sylacauga GROWS Community Garden on Saturday morning.

Dozens of volunteers were also on hand for cleanup and yard work in and around the garden in Sylavon Court, where the new greenhouse is being raised.

Margaret Morton, SAFE’s Executive Director, introduced and thanked Bill Roberts as well as Connie Wright who, with her husband the late mayor Sam Wright, were instrumental in building the volunteer momentum behind the successful establishment of the garden. Leaders from local churches and other community organizations were recognized for their leadership and involvement.

Sylacauga Mayor Jim Heigl and members of the city council, along with state representative Ron Johnson, participated. Walmart manager Aaron Fenton was praised by Morton for his important help with the project.

The Sylacauga GROWS Community Garden provides fresh food to many local organizations. Morton earlier told SylacaugaNews.com that the garden helped feed more than 500 families in 2016 and provided over 2,000 hours of community service for students and other members of the community.

SAFE, the Sylacauga Alliance for Family Enhancement, celebrates its 20th anniversary this October. The non-profit community-based organization provides a variety of programs and services including transportation, adult education, after school, healthy marriage and relationships, family literacy, fatherhood, health and wellness, home instruction for pre-schoolers, work counseling and job mentoring, industry training, medication assistance, case management, substance abuse, community gardening, and parenting education and support.
