SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The 80th Annual Miss Sylacauga and 4th Annual Miss Marble Valley Pageant is just weeks away, but the Sylacauga Parks and Recreation Department is still looking for young ladies to participate.

Participants for the Miss Sylacauga pageant must live within a 50 mile radius of the city. Miss Marble Valley is an open preliminary for any young lady in the state of Alabama. Packets for participants can be picked up at the J. Craig Smith Community Center and must be returned by Jan. 13. Organizers of the pageant are also looking for more people to contribute to the Maxye Veazey Patrons Scholarship. This scholarship help participants further their education. Veazey was the program director of the Sylacauga Parks and Recreation for many years and was instrumental in starting Miss Sylacauga. Contributions will be accepted until Jan. 20.

Miss Sylacauga contestants will participate in multiple phases of competition including private interview, talent, on-stage question, evening gown, and more.

“These are very well rounded young ladies who have a lot to say,” said 1997 Miss Sylacauga Winner Summer Ernest. “We’re so proud just to be able to showcase their talents.”

The fun of the pageant does not come without some very hard work. Ernest told SylacaugaNews.com there are many things that go on behind the scenes. She said volunteers, directors, choreographers, and many others work year-round to make sure everything will be perfect for the big night.

For the 80th anniversary of the Miss Sylacauga Pageant, former winners will be brought back to partake in a reception before the pageant kicks off and they will also participate in the opening number. “I’m proud to be a part of this storied tradition,” said Ernest. “We are 80 years strong, and we’re hoping to see another 80 years.”

The 2017 Miss Sylacauga and Miss Marble Valley Pageant will be held at seven p.m. on Jan. 28 in the Sylacauga High School auditorium. Tickets can be purchased upon arrival.
