Pinecrest Elementary embarks on One School, One Book campaign

SHARE NOW

This month Pinecrest Elementary School will be embarking on a special project, an all-school book club called One School, One Book, according to principal Debbie Barnett. Every Pinecrest family will receive a copy of the same book and will be asked to read it together with their children at home over the next few weeks.

“Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader,” she remarked. “It is also a fun, worthwhile family activity.”

With the One School, One Book program, Pinecrest aims to build a Community of Readers at school. Everyone – students, parents, teachers, even administrative staff will all be following along together reading the same book.

Pinecrest students will receive a copy of a carefully selected title at a special school-wide assembly introducing the program and the book. Along with the book, parents will receive a reading schedule so they can keep up at home. The daily book readings will generally take about 15 minutes for the families to complete.

One School, One Book is a novel program in that children of all grade levels are encouraged to read the same book with their families. This program will jump start a reading campaign encouraging Pinecrest students to read 40 books during the school year. Book selections will vary between 20 assigned books, and 20 personal selections from all genres of literary works. Pinecrest students are gearing up to “Read Big” to promote literacy and learning.
