SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The heart of a community is strong when one of its own has a struggle. For many in Sylacauga, following the story – and struggle – of Heather Adair has been a long and arduous journey.

However, for Heather, it’s not a struggle. It’s a fight.

Since January 2017, Heather has been battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The 39-year-old mother of two recently completed chemotherapy and was in remission.

That was until last week.

“Last week was such a hard week for me finding out the fight was not over,” said Heather. “I was so emotionally down last week. As low as I’ve ever been. I knew I wasn’t defeated but I also knew God was going to have to bring me some help. I had not told many people of the news.”

But knowing she was on the frontline of the battlefield once again, Heather decided to handle it head-on in a different way.

“This weekend I decided to dance a sacrifice of praise at the SDPAC recital. It was a dance to my God to remind myself how much He loves us. I posted the dance with the news. Since then the outpour of support from our community has been overwhelming. God has shown up to encourage me and used the body of Christ to encourage me to keep fighting!”

On Tuesday, Heather’s son Owen had a tee-ball game. What was going to happen at the ballfields was unexpected by many. The Sylacauga Little League Rookie White Team wanted to do something in honor of Owen’s mom.

“Team Adair” was formed by a few moms to show Heather and the Adair family how much they are supported.

“God has shown up to encourage me and used the body of Christ to encourage me to keep fighting!”

“When I think of Heather Adair I think of poise, elegance and FAITH,” said Lindsay Johns. “It’s amazing to see the strength of her faith and how she continues to fight with so much peace. A peace that can only come from above! Heather has been such an inspiration not only in my life but in many young girls as she has been a light and amazing role model for the young girls in our community. We love Heather and hope she knows the entire community is fighting and praying for her daily!”

Johns said jerseys were made in the violet color which represents Hodgkins Lymphoma. The team received balloons and released them and flowers were given to Heather from the opposing team — the Pink Team.

“A special thank you to [Owen’s] baseball team, Little League, parents, coaches and ball players. I was so encouraged tonight with the shirts, flowers and balloons! I love this community! I am so encouraged! I needed this! I can do this! Thank you for fighting with me. I know I’m not alone. God and my brothers and sisters are with me,” said Heather.

“We are just so encouraged by our community and the support we have received,” said Heather’s husband Michael. “I can’t imagine living anywhere else and having to go through this fight. We are so fortunate to be a part of a community like Sylacauga. I’m also very encouraged by my wife and the example she sets as she displays her strength and courage. A special thanks to the Smiths, the Carmacks, the Johns, and the Hardys for orchestrating this awesome display of kindness! Brian Carmack led such a touching message during the event. Brian has always been one of my favorite people. To hear him lead the prayer is something I’ll never forget.”

Earlier in the year, the 5A State Champion Sylacauga High School Boys Basketball team engaged Michael and the couple’s oldest son Anderson as Heather continued to battle.
