SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Isabel Anderson Comer Museum and Arts Center announces a new artist, Rev. Pamela Canzater, for the Black History Month Exhibition.

Rev. Pamela Canzater is a native Alabamian, who, at 62, feels as any other elder who is ready to tell their story to a broader audience rather than a “new” artist.

Rev. Canzater does tell her story by utilizing techniques she first learned as an art major in the public school system in New York City. She took paint to wood, bringing out the rhythms of her emotions through the patterns of pine and oak.

She became a griot in her family, sitting to listen as her great grandmother, grandmother, grandfather, mother, father, aunts, and uncles told stories and sang songs of their family so the lessons taught to her and her sister would go on to be shared with others.

Providentially, Rev. Canzater and her daughters joined the congregation of Pilgrim Church, United Church of Christ, where Rev. Paul Eknes-Tucker is the pastor. The members agreed to Rev. Canzater’s proposal of beginning Pilgrim Arts Ministry, which is open to all. You can find Rev. Canzater there in the ‘art studio’ with a member, friend, or by herself, creating another piece of art.

See how this daughter of the south took all her elders impressed upon her to survive the integration of the north. Read and experience a black girl/teen/woman coming of age in the seventies. Immerse and connect your sensibilities with the hard earned wisdom of the new artist in our midst at the Isabel Comer Museum and Arts Center. After all, she only took six decades to get there.

Artist’s Reception is Thursday, Feb. 15 from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Admission is free, donations are welcome, and food and beverage will be served.

Rev. Canzater’s artwork may be viewed on her website here.
