Paving project has slight setback from Alberto; costs staying near bid amount

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – People have been excited for new roads, as the paving project officially began last month.

The project began around a month ago, with city officials talking to contractors and engineers, making sure everything was in place for the paving process to begin.

Mayor Jim Heigl said the project is currently around 30 percent complete. The surface treatment, which consists of tar and gravel binding the wearing surface paving and prevents cracking of new asphalt, was completed last week.

The construction company has been set back this week because of Tropical Storm Alberto. It will resume wearing surface paving operations and milling operations when weather conditions allow. Two to three dry days are needed for paving.

The wearing surface has been completed on North Hellen Ave., North Curran Street, and North Main Avenue from Highway 21 to the railroad tracks. This area is around 10 percent complete with the wearing surface paving.

South Church Ave., East Fort Williams and West Fort Williams will be paved next, if all goes according to plan.

The contractors have been coordinating with Blue Bell and the pipe crossing work on West 4th St., and should be completed by the end of the week. A water tap is scheduled for next week on North Ave., which should not affect the paving work. If it happens to interfere, they will work around it.

The project costs have so far stayed close to the bid amount. These costs are subject to change, as the project continues. The contractors will know more once they get further along with the wearing surface paving.

Heigl said the project is currently 18 percent ahead of schedule, and the city will be paying for materials and labor up front. “In April we paid out approximately $35,000 for labor and materials. Doing it this way, the city can save approximately $60,000 on the overall cost of the project.”

A representative has been asked to attend the City Council meeting Tuesday, June 5, to give an update of the project and inform the citizens.
