WINTERBORO, Ala. – Winterboro High School and Sycamore Elementary are getting closer to their merger as each day passes.

In January, the Talladega County Board of Education approved a bid from Blalock Build Company for more than $18,000,000 to build a new school for Winterboro High School.

The decision was made last year in a meeting when a tax vote for the school district had the majority vote to combine Winterboro High School and Sycamore Elementary School. The members of the Board of Education estimated the amount it would cost.

The Director of Operations for Talladega County Schools, Kelvin Cunningham, previously told SylacaugaNews.com, ““We’re excited about being able to build a first class building for the students of Winterboro and Sycamore. I’m more excited for the children and parents who have been in support of building this school. The principals have had input, and all the teachers are excited. New is always good.”

The new school will sit directly beside today’s Winterboro High School. Construction is coming along nicely. It can be seen right off of Hwy. 21.

Once complete, the school will truly be a breath-taking state of the art facility.

Cunningham said the school should be completed for the 2019-2020 school yea, but the recent rainy weather has caused a few delays. “We’re hoping and praying for the school to be ready to open for the 2019-2020 school year and I think it will be ready to go by then.”

The current Winterboro High School building is currently planned to remain standing once the new school is opened. Cunningham explained meetings and other events will be held at the school. Sycamore Elementary School, however, has an unforeseen outcome at this time. Cunningham told SylacaugaNews.com it is still undecided on what will happen to the school.
