New Childersburg stadium set to be ready for 2017 football season

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The Childersburg Tigers are well on their to playing in a brand new athletics facility.

The venue, which will be home to football, track, and soccer, will feature the capacity to seat 4,000 Tiger fans and be joined with a new field-house and weight room. CHS will not follow suit as many schools move to artificial turf. The eight-lane track around the new field will surround 120 yards of a natural grass playing surface.

The facility will cost more than $7 million and is planned to be finished by late July, just in time for football season.

Childersburg High School Director of Athletics and head football coach Jonathan Beverly said the stadium was paid for by tax revenue and donations after the city voted to build a new facility and other projects surrounding the school around two years ago.

The stadium will replace legendary John Cox Stadium. Cox created the football program at CHS in 1947 and remained the head coach until he retired in 1979.

“John Cox Stadium was filled with history,” Beverly said. “Many great teams played on that field, and John Cox was and is a legend in this area to this day.” The stadium was named in his honor in 1976.

Going into his second season as head coach, Beverly believes the stadium will give his team momentum and build extra excitement heading into the 2017 season.

“There is a lot of buzz around our program as a whole and that will hopefully transfer to the field. Overall, this is just a great time to be a part of Childersburg High School athletics, and the new stadium is doing a lot to boost our morale.”
