SHARE NOW

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Congressman Mike Rogers exclusively spoke to SylacaugaNews.com about current issues facing the district, state, and the nation.

At the beginning of the interview, Rogers spoke on the Border Wall Funding Act of 2017. The law is set to make the wall, promised by President Trump, cost free to the tax payer. The legislation introduced by Rogers will levy a 2% fee on all money wired back to any country south of he U.S. “About $54 billion dollars are transferred to South American countries, and half of that is to Mexico,” Rogers explained. “This fee would generate $1 billion per-year for the U.S. border security and more specifically for the wall.”

The bill has been introduced and Rogers is waiting for the president to come out with a plan to pay for the wall. He believes his plan will be a part of the president’s payment plan.

Rogers also discussed the possibility of the U.S. pulling out of the United Nations. he explained that most U.N. policies are hostile to what our nation believes and values. “I’m not sure why we should be paying for this entity to function when it works against us,” he said. “We want to enter into bilateral agreements with any country.”

Over the last few months, fire departments in the third district have received over $1,000,000 in grants to purchase new equipment and vehicles. “Most of America’s land mass is rural, and these rural communities they don’t have traditional fire and rescue departments. They are doing good to scrape up the money to house their equipment, let along buy more equipment,” Rogers stated. “Providing these departments helps these people complete their mission.”

Senator John McCAin has been a talking point in politics lately as he has been diagnosed with brain cancer. He has received many prayers and well wishes from people those in both major political parties. On the matter Rogers said, “None of us want to see him sick. We were shocked to find out that he had brain cacner. We wish the best for him, and we hope we will have him back soon.”

Trump has been in office for six months, and Rogers said he is happy with many of the policies. He praised Trump on his foreign policy, and said he was very excited about the appointment of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.

There have been a few negatives according to Rogers. “I am very frustrated that we aren’t getting more of (Trump’s) agenda moved through congress,” he said. He also explained there are hundreds of positions that have yet to be filled that need to be filled for the country to operate properly.”
