[EDITORIAL] Why be so negative? So we can create a private group & talk about more negative things!

SHARE NOW

It’s incredible to me, after nearly two years of living in the Marble City, how much negativity I see circulating on social media about the area.

It’s almost as if no one has anything of which to be proud or happy about anything at all.

As a member of the media, I make it a point to have a pulse on what’s happening around the area. I am a member of certain social media groups and follow certain people or entities to ensure I know what’s going on. Seeing sometimes vile, disgusting, and downright disrespectful and rude comments is extremely discouraging.

Over the weekend I encountered one specific Facebook group breeding excessive incestuous negativity about the City of Sylacauga. It was as if this certain group — and the people in it — have a dark cloud overhead.

Don’t get me wrong. I strongly encourage freedom of speech, right to petition, and ability to express yourself in a public or private setting. Go for it!

But I have to ask: at what point do we stop being so negative about everything and start taking action instead of complaining all the time?

If it’s always going to be something negative, yet some type of ‘change’ is expected in relation to the complaint: start with yourself. How can you help the problem at hand? How can you shine a positive light on the situation?

If I knew of these complaints before I moved here two years ago, you might not be reading this. To the outside world, these are the reasons why people have a distaste about the City and the area.

There’s so much potential here. So much — and it’s very apparent. Bring a smile to someone’s face and create a solution.

Let’s all work for a better, more positive and encouraging Sylacauga — together.
