Coosa Co. escaped inmate holds Elmore Co. family at gunpoint; steals mini-van

ROCKFORD, Ala. – On Monday afternoon at 2:30, 27-year-old Shane Anthony Vernon, a resident of Rockford, escaped form the Coosa County Jail for the second time in a matter of weeks. His story made national headlines, even appearing on national network news. 

After escaping from the jail, Vernon robbed a home on Hwy. 231 in Rockford, tied them up, and fled the scene in a 2006 Ford Fusion. The car was found at Living Water Baptist Church just south of the Coosa/Elmore County line. Vernon then stole a mini-bike in the area and continued his escape venture.

Officers throughout East-Central Alabama are on the lookout for Vernon. According to sources close to the situation, on Tuesday around noon, Vernon robbed a family at gunpoint near or on Grass Farm Rd. in Elmore County just off of Hwy. 231.

Vernon tied the family up, threatened them and demanded items including keys to a vehicle. The vehicle is said to be a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica mini-van. The van has a fireman license plate. The tag number is 936061F.

He is considered to still be armed and dangerous. Vernon is also wearing different clothes than what he was wearing during his escape and is said to have multiple changes of clothes. He mat also be in possession of a fireman’s uniform. Vernon is a white male weighing 120 pounds and standing at five-feet seven-inches tall.
