CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The City of Childersburg took a major step forward toward new grant eligibility Tuesday night with the passage of Resolution 2018-03, which authorized Mayor Ken Wesson to execute a contract with Focused Construction Services, LLC, relative to the ongoing Ward C demolition project grant.
The company was awarded the bid to manage the project by the East Alabama Regional Planning Commission, which administrates the grant. Completing the project by the end of March will allow the City to be eligible for a new round of grants in April.

The Council approved a pair of board appointments: Trish Wesson to the Historical Preservation Commission for a term expiring on Sept. 30, 2020; and Billy Crawford to the Housing Authority for a term expiring February, 2023.
Also approved was a recommendation from Police Chief Rick McClellan to lower the speed limit on Weowoka Street in Coosa Court from 35 to 15 miles per hour.
The Council approved a pair of Travel /Training expenses: for Police Chief McClelland to attend Chief’s Conference, Feb. 26 – 29th, 2018 hosted at the Renaissance in Montgomery with per diem and registration costs; and for Rachel Carlson to attend Southern Software training (Police Programs) March 13-15 2018 in Montgomery. Travel and per diem expenses will be involved, but there is no registration fee.
The Mayor and Council went into an Executive Session to discuss employee character in a personnel matter, but took no action following the session.
The Council approved payment of invoices in the amount of $274,363.99.
During the Town Hall portion of the meeting, Mayor Wesson was quizzed on business development issues in the city, and he told the crowd that several projects took important steps forward in recent days, “Negotiating property acquisition for a new grocery store has been complicated with three entities involved – the grocery company, the out-of-state property owners, and Winn Dixie which still has about eighteen months left on their lease. But I’m happy to report that a recent development with Winn Dixie has created a lowering of the price of the property. We really hope that will spur things forward more quickly now.”
Wesson also reported that an issue with the property acquired in December by Jack’s Family Restaurants has been successfully completed, “When it was discovered that there were underground tanks on the property, A.D.E.M. got involved. Last Friday, we got that long-awaited letter from the state environmental agency that will allow the project to move forward. Unfortunately, during the delay, the construction company they use had to move to the next project on their list, and we’ll just have to wait our turn, but it is coming.”
Wesson added that are several other matters about which he cannot give details at the request of the businesses involved, “But we’ll have more good news coming in the very near future.”
