SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Central Alabama Writers Guild and Alliance (CAWGA) has announced the winners of its Young Writers’ Short Story competition.

More than 40 students from seven different schools in Central Alabama entered into the competition. In the last month, 17 different judges, including many published authors, read and reviewed the stories that were submitted, and eventually narrowed the list down to five winners from five different schools.

The winners are:

First Place: Coosa Valley Academy student Skylar Bailey’s “The Bus”

Second Place: Trinity Christian Academy student Madison Craft’s “The Forgiveness of a Daughter”

Third Place: Sylacauga High School student Madelyn Taylor’s “The Amusement Park”

Honorable Mention: Winterboro High School student Abby Leach and Oxford High School student Leighton McCrimmon.

According to CAWGA Vice President Joe Copeland, writers were judged on creativity, punctuation, content, and basic writing skills.

“We had so many talented writers who can write,” said Copeland. “It was hard to narrow it down to five.”

To honor the winners and all participants, CAWGA will hold a reception and awards ceremony at the Comer Museum and Arts Center on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 6 p.m. Copeland is encouraging everyone in the surrounding communities to come out, enjoy refreshments, and support the young writers who entered the competition.

“It’s important for children to be recognized for their talent and be encouraged to do more,” stated Copeland. “When kids have an artistic ability and get recognized, they will hang on to it, and make a career out of it.”
