Auburn University; Holmestead Farms partnering to teach canning seminar Tuesday

SHARE NOW

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Auburn University Extension Office is partnering with Holmestead Farms in Talladega to teach a water-bath canning and jam-making instructional seminar.

Holmestead Farm owner Bobby Ray Holmes told SylacaugaNews.com his farm teaches similar seminars often. Holmestead has hosted tomato seminars, vegetable seminars, and other classes in the past.

The instructional courses have many benefits, according to Holmes. “This is just a public service we do. We are trying to get people to learn how to take care of themselves when times get hard,” he explained. “This teaches people how to live off the land and eat healthy.”

Canning is a skill that many people lack Holmes claimed. He hopes this specific seminar will teach people the skill. “A lot of people know nothing about canning, and it’s an art that got away from people,” he said. “A lot of people are getting back into canning jam and jelly and this is a chance for them to learn.”

Holmestead Farm will furnish all equipment and supplies, and Auburn University will provide the instructors.

The seminar will be hosted at Holmestead Farms, at 6582 Co. Rd. 7 in Talladega on Tuesday, June 13, at 10 a.m.

Admission is free for everyone who chooses to attend.
