Annual Ultimate Ball Drop takes place Friday

SHARE NOW

SYLACAUGA, Ala. -We have all heard the expression “mic drop” after something triumphant or successful.

On Friday night, after the Sylacauga-Clay Central football game, something triumphant will occur.

Instead of a microphone dropping, hundreds of golf balls will drop from a massive crane towering over the soccer field at Legion Stadium.

The 11th Annual Ultimate Ball Drop, sponsored by SAFE, is the only fund-raiser the organization sponsors each year. Proceeds from the ball drop are used to benefit Talladega, Coosa, and Clay county youth programs such as the BRIDGES after-school program, home visitation programs (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) and Parents As Teachers), including the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, and the Sylacauga Grows Community Garden and fruit orchard.

“Friday night, it will be raining golf balls on the soccer field at Legion Stadium,” said Margaret Morton, executive director of SAFE. “If your golf ball is the first to land in the cup you will be the recipient of $5,000 donated by Taylor Pursell. Your $5 donation includes the opportunity for the $5,000, but provides funds to supports education, the arts, after-school, home visitation, and school/community gardens and access to children’s books for children and families in Talladega, Coosa and Clay counties.”

Richard Conn and his equipment company, Conn Equipment Rengal, Inc., will load hundreds of golf balls onto a crane and drop them onto the field.

Morton said the event helps funding to ensure every child has the opportunity to have the five promises fulfilled in their lives: caring adults, safe places, healthy start for a healthy future, an effective education, and opportunities to serve.

Tickets are available at SAFE and the Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce.
