MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State Department of Education has released its report cards which garde Alabama’s K-12 public schools much like schools do students, with letter grades. This report includes all public school systems and each school with grades 3-12.

The Alabama State Report Card is designed so parents, educators, stakeholders, and others can easily understand how their schools are doing, just as report cards help parents understand how their children are doing. The goals of the Alabama State Report Card are to provide a starting point, with easy-to-understand and concise information showing how a school is meeting goals, and to make sure that schools are accountable for explaining that to their communities.

Of Alabama’s 137 school systems, 76% received either an A, B, or C; 73% of the schools without a Grade 12 received either an A, B, or C; and 77% of schools with a Grade 12 received an A, B, or C. No school system received an F, but 95 schools without a Grade 12 and 9 schools with a Grade 12 did receive F’s.

Here is a list of metrics the state uses to determine what letter grade a school system and its particular schools will receive.

Yesterday, Superintendent of Sylacauga City Schools Todd Freeman released a video detailing what metrics and aspects of education school systems and particular schools are graded on. These metrics are called indicators. Freeman said the Sylacauga City School’s System and Sylacauga High School are graded on academic achievement, academic growth, graduation rate, college and career readiness and chronic absenteeism. Pinecrest Elementary and Nichols-Lawson are graded on less indicators and fall under the “schools without a grade 12” category. Pinecrest and Nichols-Lawson are only graded under the academic achievement, academic growth and chronic absenteeism categories.

According to the ALSDE report cards, the Sylacauga City School system averaged out to a “B” with a score of 82. Statewide, schools earned a “C” average. Here is how SCS ranked with individual indicators compared to state averages:

  • Academic achievement – 60.58. State average – 60.27
  • Academic growth – 89.10.  State average – 87.86
  • Graduation rate – 92. State average – 87.
  • College and career readiness – 75. State average – 66.
  • Chronic absenteeism – 18.09. State average – 17.68.

Nichols-Lawson graded out with a C average with a score of 78. Pinecrest also has a C average with a score of 75. Sylacauga High School earned a B average with a score of 82.

Below is a video released by Sylacauga City Schools discussing the grades its system and schools received from the state.

Following the scores being released Freeman stated, “The mission of Sylacauga City Schools is to prepare our students for college, career, and community success. Our strategic plan goals are prioritized based on providing the best learning experiences we can for every student who attends our schools.”

He went on to say, “The Sylacauga City Schools report card, along with many other measures not reported, provides useful information for us as we continue to improve. Sylacauga City Schools has great teachers who are working diligently to provide our students with excellent learning opportunities. We have tremendous support from parents and our community to make our schools the very best. Our focus on academic achievement and commitment to accomplishing our mission are as strong as ever.”
