TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama and Notre Dame announced a home-and-home series between the Crimson Tide and Fighting Irish set for the 2028 and 2029 seasons on Thursday.

“It doesn’t get more tradition-rich than Alabama and Notre Dame when it comes to college football,” Alabama Director of Athletics Greg Byrne said. “What a great opportunity this is for our program and for our fans to kick off the 2028 and 2029 seasons.”

The first meeting will take place in South Bend, on Sept. 2, 2028, with Notre Dame returning the trip to Tuscaloosa on Sept. 1, 2029.

The 2028 matchup will be the be the eighth meeting between two of college football’s most storied programs and the first since the Crimson Tide defeated the Irish 42-14 in the BCS National Championship Game in Miami, Fla., at the conclusion of the 2012 season.

“We are excited to be able to add a home-and-home series with a team like Notre Dame,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said. “Alabama and Notre Dame represent two of the most storied programs in college football history. What a great opportunity for our team and our fans to be able to witness these teams play in two of the sport’s most iconic venues in Tuscaloosa and South Bend.”

Notre Dame holds a 5-2 edge in the series with three meetings coming in bowl games. The teams first squared off on Dec. 31, 1973, in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans and then met again on Jan. 1, 1975, (1974 season) at the Orange Bowl in Miami.

The two programs then held home-and-home series in 1976 (South Bend) and 1980 (Birmingham) and then again in 1986 (Birmingham) and 1987 (South Bend). The Crimson Tide won the 1986 game at Legion Field 7-0.

Alabama is scheduled to open the 2018 season on Sept. 1 in Orlando, Fla., against Louisville. The Crimson Tide will then face Duke in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in 2019 and Miami (Fla.) in the 2021 game in Atlanta.
