[SEC MEDIA DAYS] Odds and ends at SEC Media Days 2017 in Hoover

SHARE NOW

HOOVER, Ala. – When it comes to SEC Media Days, nothing is off limits. The highs and lows and facts and figures of college football are exposed and we have broken down some of the best from the week.

  • The SEC stopped giving an exact number of attending members of the media but Director of Communications Chuck Dunlap said it was over 1,000 for the forth straight year.
  • Of the 14 head coaches, only three have ever taken a team to the SEC championship game: Nick Saban, Gus Malzahn and Jim McElwain, making Saban and Malzahn the only active SEC coaches with titles.
  • Three players and their head coaches faced a media gauntlet during the week.
  • There were at least 60 radio stations, 60 TV stations, and 100 internet/newspaper writers from College Station to Miami. CBS, ESPN, The SEC Network and Sirius XM Radio represented the national media leading to well over 600 interviews.
  • Nick Saban was quite disappointed in the snacks provided by the SEC. For those who do not know, he likes his Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Pies. “Little Debbie Raisin? No Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Pies? After 16 years, you’d think they would get it right,” he said Wednesday.
  • No team in the SEC wears green.
  • Kentucky Senior Linebacker Courtney Love shares Twitter accounts with Courtney Love the musician/actress.
  • Auburn All American Senior Daniel Carlson is only second placekicker to attend SEC Media Days. Georgia’s John Kasay represented the Bulldogs back in 1990 which is terrific news for Carlson, Kasay went on to play 20 years in the NFL.
  • The SEC sign on the windows of the Hyatt-Regency Hotel is 116′ x 68′ – six stories high. It took three full days to apply the SEC logo and slogan “IT JUST MEANS MORE.” It was a noisy task so the hotel management moved the band Journey, playing at the nearby Verizon Amphitheater, to the top floor so they could sleep during the day.
  • SEC Media Days has been held In Birmingham since 1985. There is discussion the venue may move and even rotate venues from year to year. 2018’s event could be held in Nashville, Dallas, Atlanta, Dallas or…Hoover.

Last but not least, this is Tiger Jake and owner Ron Sanford.

Tiger Jake is a service dog he will attend every Auburn home game this season.
